Miss USA 2017: Kara McCullough

Today the Fox network celebrated Mother’s Day in a big way by airing the 2017 Miss USA pageant live from the Mandalay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas! This year’s hosts were Terrance Jenkins and Juliana Hugh and there was a special performance by Pitbull.

This year the pageant took another step forward in diversity. The top five contestants were mainly women of color. The 2nd runner up was Miss Minnesota  Meridith Gould and the first runner up was Miss New Jersey Chhabi Verg. The newly crowned Miss USA is Kara McCullough who is a chemist for a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This is also a second win for the District of Columbia. McCullough was born in Italy and raised in Virginia. She hopes to inspire children to pursue science, math, technology, and engineering.  During her first walk after being crowned, she pointed to the camera and said “Follow your dreams”! We can’t wait to see what she contributes to STEM programs in schools during her reign of Miss USA.
