After honoring legendary women in hip hop last year, Hip Hop Honors returned last night to celebrate the golden era of hip hop in the 90s. Regina Hall was the host for the night. Many celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Martin Lawrence, Jermanine Dupri, Master P, and Hype Williams were honored for bringing hip hop into the mainstream.
Mariah Carey was awarded the ” Music Icon” for bringing Hip Hop to Pop. DJ Khaled and Asahd Khaled presented her the award.
Hype Williams was awarded for the best music videos of the 90s. Pharrell Williams presented him the award. But before, he made a speech about the things that has been going on in the world. “For everybody at home watching this and acting like y’all don’t see what’s going on out there, you gotta open your eyes.Don’t think just because they’re coming at the African Americans and they’re coming at the Jewish community and they’re coming at the Hispanics that it can’t be you.” he said.
Lil Kim and Fabulous paid tribute to Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, while Fat Joe and Remy Ma paid tribute to Big Pun. Teyana Taylor was among the many performers. She danced while on a broken foot to a dance medley honoring the 90’s biggest hits.
