Nike is celebrating 30 years of ‘Just Do It’ this year and has decided to make former NFL player, Colin Kaepernick, the face of their campaign.
Some patriotic fans have become outraged over the NFL player turned activist. They have gone so far as cutting the Nike check off of their socks and burning all of their Nike merchandise. Talk about angry!
We can all recall the infamous moment Kaepernick decided to kneel during the National Anthem, which was the start to a nationwide movement. Since that point on, many patriotic Americans have called his actions as the actions of many other African American athletes, disrespectful.
Dallas Cowboys DE , DeMarcus Lawrence commented on the campaign and the responses it received saying that he supports Kaepernick and calls the shoe burning childish.
Social media has found humor in the angry Americans, urging them to give all of their unwanted Nike gear to Kaepernick’s supporters. Satirical memes inspired by Kaepernick’s quote , “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” have also been shared across Instagram and Twitter.
Since the week’s events Nike has gone on to release a commercial featuring Kaepernick and other star athletes like Serena Williams and Lebron James.
