A federal judge has recently reconsidered the massive cash payout verdict for the T.I. and Tiny Harris’ case against major toy company LOL Surprise! from a whopping $71.4 million to $17 million.
T.I. and wife Tameka Harris aka Tiny, sued the toy company MGA Entertainment, who owns LOL Surprise! last year over allegations that their line of ‘blind box dolls’ had ‘violated their intellectual property’.
The couple were first awarded $17.8 million in real damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages.
Judge James Selna has suggested in a new filing that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that the toy company had bad faith so the reduced amount would be lowered by over $53 million.
Yet to make a final decision, Judge James Selna has said he has a lot to think about and wants to ”come back to it fresh from the top”.
The lawsuit was originally submitted after T.I. and Tiny accused MGA Entertainment of copying the likeness of their girl group, OMG Girlz; with at least seven of the dolls in the product line had copied the groups likeness.
Their daughter, Star, who was a member of the group, also testified at the hearing along with other bandmates.
T.I. and Tiny also accused the toy company of bullying them during the legal dispute which MGA has denied, as well as denying allegations of copyright, calling the couple ”extortionists”.
